CHANGE OF MIND
The move comes conveniently at a time when tensions between the EU and top oil supplier Russia are running high.
According to a story on Mining.com, The EU has changed its mind about labeling Canadian oil sands as "dirty."
The change would open up European markets to energy from Canada. The above quote sort of tells the tale. Before the Ukraine situation erupted, the European Commission had a different take:
The commission agreed in 2011 that oil sands fuel should receive a carbon rating a fifth higher than for standard oil, but some member states balked at the move.
In short what the change means is it "drops a mandatory requirement for oil sands oil to be labelled as unclean and highly polluting."
Some politicians and environmentalists are unhappy. But it shows what a threat of an energy crunch will do.
