COMING BACK AROUND
Amazon the huge online retailer is about to prove an old saying about nothing new under the sun or what goes around will show up again with its plans to open 300 to 400 brick and mortar book stores, according to reports.
Not so long ago most brick and mortar bookstores bit the dust as the rage for online shopping nudged its way into consumer habits. So what's up here? One thing hardly anyone thought of a generation ago when the new, exciting online market started to come of age, putting many bricks and mortar firm in a state of decline.
With bookstores it was even worse as many finally dusted off their shelves and tossed in thier mortar and bricks. Names like B. Dalton and Border's joined many smaller ones. Also caught in the fury were lots of mom and popper book outlets, but recent numbers show some mom and pop store are successfully making a comeback. The attractive meme then was "cutthroat prices and seemingly limitless products,"according to the WSJ.
Consumers who visit bricks and mortar stores buy more stuff, 50% more, those online shoppers. Bricks and mortar allow the actual senses come into play touch, feel and try on before buying on the Internet. Amazon opened its first store last November in Seattle, it's home ground. Books are only one products considered here. It could include electronic products, a big part of Amazon's online world.
Some consultants say online shoppers and bricks and mortar ones are not always the same crowd, so the idea is to appeal to those who don't visit a particular retailer's online site. An interesting statistic after all this time of online availability and marketed convenience is, nearly 90% still happens at brick and mortar firms.
